Group Art Show and
Sale
Here is the deal. We are in need of some new sound equipment to make
On the Rise At Night sound even better than it already does. Our speakers
and amplifier are great. The mixer we have been using is starting to
lose some of its channels. The monitor system we have needs improvement
and a few more mics are in order, especially when we bring in the big
bands. To raise money for these purchases we came up with an idea that
is fun and will involve all of us in a creative venture. For the month
of May at OTR the art on the walls will be pieces made for the “cheap
art sale”. We are asking supporters of art and music at On the
Rise to create sketches, prints, collages, and photos: anything that
you can hang on the wall to contribute to this extravaganza. Customers
can buy works off the wall and 100% of all proceeds will go directly
to the purchase of our new sound equipment.
Why can’t On the Rise
Bakery purchase the equipment needed?
We are a small venue. We don’t make a lot of money on the music.
We are committed to bringing music, film and theatre to the community,
but we need your support in sustaining the effort. Sale of drinks and
food pays for our materials and employees behind the counter but does
not always stretch far enough to pay for the outstanding performances
you enjoy. It does not generate any revenue to allow for equipment upgrades
so we embark on this fundraising art show.
Community Art supports local music and performance.
Aside from being a great fundraising event the art show offers everybody
in the On the Rise Community to show off his or her individual talent
in a group art show that we hope will cover every square foot of our
available wall space. The visual impact should be stunning and inspiring.
Thank you in advance for your participation.
Party!
We will have an installation/ opening party on Weds April 30th. The
evening will get everybody involved together to put up the artwork,
listen to music, eat free fresh pizza and have a great time. Schedule
and details to be announced soon.
All the best,
Ben&Rae
*Artwork does not need to be
framed, or fancy.
** Feel free to respond to Rae or myself with questions and suggestions

It has been to long since I
have sat down to update the news here, mostly because I have been having
a hard time with my FTP uploading the site. It is frustrating to do a
whole bunch of work on the site and then have the ftp programm keep rejecting
my attempts to upload... There is a lot going on at OTR so I will attempt
to bring everybody up to date on the most important info. |

We had a lot of fun this past
week. Wednesday night was a lot of fun. The bluegrass crew did not let
a little snow and ice stand in the way of their Wednesday night jam. We
had a house full of great musicians and a good audience. High Lonesome
played some great original tunes on Friday night and then The Rubblebucket
Orchestra rolled in and rocked bakery with their great big, funky, afro
beat sound. Thanks to everybody who came out to play, listen, or dance.

MONDAY NIGHT THEATRE
UPDATE:
Kevin picked up on the fact that the play we are showing this Monday
Feb 4th is based on an event that happened in Huntington, VT over 100
years ago..." Hi Ben, I was intrigued by the "Mildred
Taken Crazy" play. Folks may like to know that Mildred was a daughter
of the Brewster farm family in Huntington, from which Brewster-Pierce
School gets its name. A little notariety in our past! I've attached
an old newspaper
article written at the time of the murder. I hope to attend the
performance. Kevin"
Thank you Kevin,
Ben |

POSTERS
You probably know this already but we have great
music and films at On the Rise Weds thru Saturday nights. I am looking
for a little help getting the word out. If you are willing and know
of a good place to hang a venue poster with our schedule on it I would
be grateful! I would like to set up a "poster distribution list"
for anyone who wants to print one out and stick it up at work or on
a busy corner. I will send the poster out once a week. It will be a
simple black and white .jpg file. Drop me an e-mail ben@ontherisebakery.net
if you are interested.
Thanks,
Ben |

WINE
LIST
Well, we decided to give everybody a few more choices. This Thursday we
will have a new wine list for you try out. I am excited to offer a couple
of local choices: mead and sparkling mead from Honeygardens
in Ferrisburg and Cayuga White 2006 from Shelburne
Vineyard. Additionally we will add some new organic wines to our list
from Cooper Mountain Vineyards,
Oregon and Hallcrest Vineyards,
California. All in all we should end up with three reds by the glass,
three whites by the glass, and traditional mead by the glass. Other wines
will be available by the bottle.
Please let me know if you have specific recommendations for future wine
list revisions! All
the best,
Ben

THEATRE
So, some of you know me for the bakery, baking bagels, gardening or
maybe drawing and building houses. Before Rae and I moved back to Richmond.
I worked for six years as a stage and lighting designer in NYC on and
off broadway. I made a lot of great friends during my stint in the city.
Many of the closest, I worked with while teaching design, and technical
direction at Barnard College. Denny was the chair of the theatre dept.
while I was there and Steve taught acting and play-writing. Now I am
so glad to welcome them to our little venue in Richmond to perform their
latest work. Read on now, I will cut and paste in a summery. Special
engagement Monday Feb. 4th 7:30.
Mud Time Theater presents
MILDRED TAKEN CRAZY
A performance by Steve Friedman and Denny Partridge
MILDRED TAKEN CRAZY is an original
two-person play about a Vermont murder of 1897, famous in its day and
now forgotten, a crime of passion replete with issues of sexual exploitation,
the nature of madness and the pitfalls of romantic love.
The play is 40 minutes long
and spans five decades in epic fashion with two actors and a single
chair. It uses a fresh combination of song, drama and storytelling to
help the audience both feel and think its way through a moment of violence
with far-reaching consequences.
The performance is followed
by a discussion and Q/A with actor/writers Friedman and Partridge on
the strategies and techniques used in making MILDRED TAKEN CRAZY and
on approaches to making a play from local materials. The play’s
creators will also share their experience in uncovering a new ending
to the old story of Mildred Brewster.
Steve Friedman and Denny Partridge
have been pioneers of “epic minimalism” since the 1970s,
finding ways for theaters with little or no means to tackle very large
subjects and do them justice. Among other things, MILDRED TAKEN CRAZY
is an object lesson in how to make a show happen without waiting for
your big break.
MILDRED TAKEN CRAZY premiered
at the November 2007 International Federation for Theater Research Conference
on Storytelling in Krakow, Poland, with an additional public performance
at the Ernst Busch National Theater School in Berlin, Germany.
A spring-summer 2008 tour of
New England and New York is currently being booked, followed by a week’s
run at the 2008 Victoria (British Columbia) Fringe Festival in August.

SEED ORDERS-GARDEN-WORM
FARMS
Working on ordering seeds for the gardens, scheduling to start seeds
in the green house, thinking about red worm composting in order to reuse
our vegetable compost. We are really stoked to expand our gardens this
summer even further in order to bring the best fresh, local pizza toppings
and salads to Richmond this spring. If you have advice for me about
starting into worm composting I would be happy if you e-mailed me. Right
now I plan on continuing to compost a good chunk of our waste in bins
as we have successfully so far but I would like to turn some of our
good veggie waste into vermicompost.
